June Little Altars – Simple Summer Collage

Little Altars - Summer Collage for June (2 of 2)Still catching up on the months of Little Altar projects.  Here’s what happened in June, as I wrote it back then.

This month I was inspired by a few things:  An earring that David found on the road on our morning walk.  It had obviously been run over, and though the wire was mashed, the main part was in pretty good shape and seems to be well made. I like it!

I’ve also been inspired by some collage art work in my dentist’s office.  I’ve had the opportunity to see it a few times (!), and he’s got good taste!  I haven’t tried any collage for decades, but this work made me want to approach it again.  My project this month looks nothing like the piece by Carrie Kaufman, but the mounted copper wire attachment is a pretty direct inspiration.  What I’ve found on-line by Carrie is not as delectable (to me) as the large piece I saw in person.

Lastly, it’s summer.  The hand and basket remind me of gathering flowers and harvests.  The warm colors of the basket, and the branch covered with moss tell me it’s inviting to go outside.  It’s Easy Time.  We are enjoying fresh greens, and radishes from the seeds that Peg sent. They are delish!Little Altars - Summer Collage for June (1 of 2)

Steel Wire and Niihau Shells

Steel Wire and Niihau Shell Earrings

Steel Wire and Niihau Shell Earrings – click to enlarge

A few days ago I sold these earrings in my Etsy shop.  They are a favorite pair, and I want to mark for myself the realization that I’m accomplishing one of my goals of moving into working with metal: the joining of beadwork and metalwork.

Niihau shells are special to me because they were treated as very precious things when I was growing up in Hawaii.  Many years ago (now) I inherited a couple of Niihau shell leis and love them dearly.  But my life does not lend itself to wearing them, and I decided to take a few shells off to play with.  This is one of the results.  I’m feeling like I want to do more.

My alcohol ink pals

Alcohol Ink Cast of Players

Over the last couple of years I’ve been using some alcohol inks on certain jewelry items.  I’m currently doing some real-world testing on finishes that I hope will seal the ink and keep it from fading or wearing off the metal.  As this process continues, I still enjoy looking at my color samples arranged on display.  Sort of a styrofoam cake of my entire cast of characters.  The alcohol inks are nice in their pure colors, and nice when gently combined.  I’m also enjoying taking the color off with a steel brush wheel, and starting over with a fresh surface.  Works in process.

It was fun to pull together some earrings for a group shot. These will go up on Etsy over the next few days. Click on the images to enlarge.
